Vision Pro Update: WWDC 2024 - All the Hot New Features!

The Vision Pro just got a massive upgrade at WWDC 24, and here's everything you need to know:

New Environments (but only one for now):

  • Bora Bora is finally here! Dive into this stunning virtual paradise, but be prepared to download it first.
  • We're still waiting for more environments, Apple. Come on, give us some variety!

Home View Gets a Personal Touch:

  • Tired of your app icons being stuck in alphabetical order? Now you can rearrange them however you like, just like jiggle mode on your iPhone!

Guest User Improvements (with a limitation):

  • Save your guest users' eye and hand data for a smoother experience on repeat visits.
  • But there's a catch: it seems like you can only store data for one guest at a time. Not ideal for a family VR setup.

Multi-tasking with Major League Flavor:

  • Watch multiple MLB and MLS games simultaneously in the Apple TV app! Choose your main window and enjoy up to four additional games in separate views.
  • This feature was already available for the NBA, but now it's a party for all the major sports fans.

Persona Gets an Upgrade:

  • Apple's avatar system, Persona, is still in beta, but it's getting better! Expect more accurate skin tones, vibrant colors, and smoother movements.
  • The setup process is also faster, making it easier to jump into your virtual persona.

Finally! Keyboard Breakthrough:

  • No more struggling to type in VR! You can now see your keyboard from any environment, thanks to Vision OS 2's clever cropping feature.
  • Plus, you can connect your Magic Mouse or any third-party Bluetooth mouse for even more control.

Cinematic Safari:

  • Immerse yourself in videos on Safari with a "cinematic mode" that adjusts the display to fit your virtual environment. It even adds a cool glow and reflection!

Communication Safety for Peace of Mind:

  • This new feature protects children from receiving or attempting to send sensitive photos and videos. You'll get a warning and the option to blur the content before viewing.

AirPlay Receiver (needs some work):

  • The ability to mirror content from your iPhone or iPad to the Vision Pro sounds awesome, but it seems buggy in the beta. Hopefully, Apple irons this out before the final release.

Mindfulness on the Go:

  • The Mindfulness app now tracks your breathing during meditation sessions, providing visual animations that match your inhales and exhales.
  • It's a cool way to enhance your focus and relaxation.

Look to Dictate in Messages:

  • This feature makes composing messages a breeze! Just look at the mic icon, and it'll start pulsing when ready for voice dictation. No more fumbling with the virtual keyboard.

Transform Your Photos into Spatial Masterpieces:

  • Vision OS 2 lets you turn your old 2D photos into stunning 3D spatial photos using machine learning. It creates a layered depth effect, making your pictures come alive!
  • The only downside? You can't edit these photos within the Vision Pro app itself. Come on, Apple, give us some editing power!

New Gestures for a Smoother Experience:

  • There are some new hand gestures to navigate the Vision Pro. Raise your hand and tap a circle to access the home screen, or flip your hand to control the volume.
  • It takes some getting used to, but it could be a more intuitive way to interact with VR.

Mac Virtual Display Gets an Upgrade (but not quite there yet):

  • The Mac virtual display gets three new size options – normal, wide, and ultra-wide. The ultra-wide promises a crazy dual 4K monitor experience!
  • However, these options are still under development and not available in the beta.

Train Mode for a Smoother Ride:

  • Traveling by train with the Vision Pro? Apple is adding "Train Mode" to hopefully improve app tracking and performance while on the move.

Exciting News for Content Creators:

  • Creating spatial content just got easier! Canon will offer a new affordable lens compatible with the Canon R7 camera for capturing spatial videos.
  • Editing will also be a breeze with Final Cut Pro support for spatial videos, and you can share them in the new Vimeo app for Vision OS.

Become an Immersive Video Creator:

  • Apple is partnering with Blackmagic to create a new immersive video workflow, including cameras, editing software, and compression tools.
  • This opens doors for creators to make those 180-degree, 8K immersive experiences we've seen in demos.
